Falling Walls Summit 2025: Science, Responsibility, and the Future of Innovation

At the Falling Walls Science Summit 2025 in Berlin, leading figures from science, politics, and society came together to explore how research can contribute to a fair, secure, and innovative future. German Research Minister Dorothee Bär opened the discussions of the Reasearch and Innovation Summit by emphasizing the importance of equal opportunities in science. She called for a research culture that values diversity, inclusion, and fairness as key drivers of creativity and excellence. According to Bär, scientific freedom must always go hand in hand with social responsibility, and science should not only generate knowledge but also produce innovation that benefits society as a whole. To stay competitive internationally, Germany and Europe must accelerate their innovation processes and strengthen cooperation across disciplines and sectors.

Beyond these themes of openness and fairness, this year’s summit also addressed ethical and security dimensions of modern research, particularly concerning artificial intelligence (AI) and dual-use technologies that can serve both civilian and military purposes. Experts and policymakers debated how to balance the openness essential to scientific progress with the need to prevent misuse of new technologies. The discussions highlighted that science can no longer remain neutral in these matters—researchers and institutions share responsibility for ensuring that technological advancements align with ethical standards and democratic values.

Our colleague Carolin Bischop was present at this year’s Falling Walls Summit, taking part in the exchange of ideas on the future of research, innovation, and responsible science. Her participation reflects our continued engagement with international scientific dialogue and our commitment to promoting collaboration across disciplines and borders.
